At line #46 of the code the mark value is -1. What’s the point of it?

-1 is when you don’t care about the mark.

Mark is a way to distinguish selected items from other another. You can select one feature with one mark and another with another mark. It’s only useful if you’re working with the property manager page selectionbox.
